AI: A Tool for Artists or Will It Take Over?

ABSTRACT

Will AI be a tool or will it take over? AI is described as a program that feeds from people’s knowledge through algorithms. AI generators utilize artists’ works without their knowledge, which can be seen as an unauthorized collaboration. This leads to artists not being credited or acknowledged, instigating a cycle in which artists try to fend for themselves against theft of their works. This could lead to artists being replaced and diminished in the workspace due to companies ignoring their employees’ needs and exploiting them, later firing them. In this case people and companies lack empathy for artists’ works and what they bring forth, preferring an uncompleted work rather than a meaningful completed one. AI’s works are generated by different images, and lead to these images being unrealistic in proportions. Additionally, “machines don’t do well with entropy or random data, making AI generators more likely to repeat patterns that are prominent, they also struggle to replicate the unique or unusual elements that human artists are more likely to experiment with” (Yap). Artists, on the other hand, demonstrate their curiosity and skills, along with their longing, thoughts, and human creativity. This makes one wonder how AI can be a tool. It can help creatives conceptualize their ideas further, highlighting what can be edited or re-worked and can enhance artists’ visions and skills, like a muse.
